Recently we had to make a decision about whether we wanted to reduce our cable TV services, or leave them as they are. We don't watch that much TV, so it was tempting to cut back. However it would have meant No More Weather Channel, and for most people I suppose that would have been easy enough to give up. But I like the Weather Channel, despite its odd scheduling ("Local on eights"...who thought of that?), its sensational storm coverage, and its prosaic choice of music. I love the weather maps, especially the ones that show gigantic weather fronts swirling across the Pacific Ocean: how small the state of Oregon looks in comparison, how insignificant is the town I live in. We are all getting the same big rain.
This morning as Eddy, Reuben, and I sloshed through the soggy, matted-down marsh grass, I watched the rivulets of clear rain water running everywhere. I thought about the big clouds on the weather maps. A thousand miles of clouds and rain, enveloping us and connecting us to the bigger world. I just like the idea of it.
Needless to say, we still get the Weather Channel.

ReplyDeleteI was just telling Ben this morning that I was waiting for another Ed & Reub post, and here it is! Hooray! I also like the Weather Channel. In lieu of the Channel, I can get a little obsessive about checking weather.com despite the fact that it gets Omuta weather right only 1/2 of the time. The marsh grass sounds nice.

Hi Chrystal, Yeah, even with all of the technology they have, the weather forecasters still get it wrong: another reason I like them!
