Art show

When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college - that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared at me, incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?" ~Howard Ikemoto

So. My job is teaching middle school art: lucky me! Middle schoolers are rapidly growing into young adults, but even so, I like to think that they haven't yet "forgotten" that they are artists. One way to remind them of this is to publicly display their art. This past weekend was the school district art show, an event that we art teachers start planning, in our disorganized way, months ahead of time.
Every year when we do this, we wonder if it was worth all of the work, but inevitably, it is. Here are a few pictures:

My car was loaded with middle school art work, mostly paper mache pop art sculptures, painstakingly painted by 7th graders. These things are sometimes huge!

The sculpture is almost as big as the student.

The watercolors were a little more manageable, plus they were so pretty.

And this little collage was a piece of cake.

I couldn't resist taking a picture of this high schooler's sculpture: so cool. Then my camera quit before I could get any shots of elementary art, darn it.

  1. Cool projects, Kerry! You told us about the pop art assignment, but I didn't get it until now...and I really like it.

  3. Kerry, I think I've mentioned before that I wish I had an art teacher like you - I will probably mention it again too. No doubt this has to do with delusions of grandeur regarding my artistic abilities if I only had a good teacher. But whether or not I harbor any frustrated creative talent, I still think your students are incredibly lucky.

  4. I feel lucky to be working with kids, in an area that is fun for me. Whether or not my students are lucky, I am not so sure! They probably have a wide variety of opinions on that topic.
