A candle at breakfast

A candle lit at breakfast. I said that this is one of my favorite things last week, and during this dark season of the year it is. This is one of the many things that I learned from my mother-in-law, years ago. It gets your day going right when it is dark and cold outside.

How she would have laughed at me, and defended me, this week when the newspaper I was reading caught on fire because I wasn't paying attention at the breakfast table. And only the night before John had reminded me to be a little more careful about those open flames around the newspapers.

But I bet you anything she set stuff on fire too.

  1. My dear sister-in-law who is from Denmark lights a candle at breakfast and it is a very lovely custom.

  2. um...yeah! i bet you she did too!!! i was just thinking about early mornings with a baby, how a candle turned the too-early darkness from a horrible thing into such a special time...what a nice thing to do for yourself!

  3. I love candles at any time of day - especially at this time of the year - but first thing in the morning is the best time. Guess I'm my mother's daughter, huh?! Lovely picture, Kerry.

  5. I am impressed that you only caught the paper on fire. I would have managed to light the paper, and as I tried to put that out, ignited the table cloth and my bathrobe!

But the part of me that doesn't want to admit that I would have created a bigger conflagration wants to leave a fire extinguisher under your tree - from Ed and Reub of course :)
