Friday My Town Shoot-Out: weird

The idea of the My Town Shoot Out is to post photos of your community every Friday, and hopefully improve your photography skills. If you would like to see examples of this week's theme from other parts of the world, go here.

All pictures taken in Corvallis, Oregon.

What is this weird thing? It isn't a fishing pole.

The students in Oregon State's College of Forestry have had a club since 1906, and twice a year they sponsor competitions at the Peavey Arboretum. These events feature traditional logging sports such as the Axe Throw, Birling, Tree Climbing, Chopping, Bucksaw...and "Limber Pole:"

Limber Pole
This water event consists of a long thin tree suspended over some body of water. Lines are painted in two foot increments in order to score a competitor's distance per run. The object of this event is to get as far out on the log as possible before it shakes you off. This is one of the more amusing events to spectate. From OSU Forestry club's Logging Sports Events.

"Birling"...have you heard this word? It is another term for the lumberjack sport of logrolling, which you probably have seen before.

I know you're already familiar with "Tree Climbing." Not weird at all...but can you imagine climbing waaaay up there with nothing but cleats on your boots and a rope in your hand? Not me! I'll leave that to the college kids.

  5. Now those would be some fine events to watch! I agree with Jama that the limber pole must be a hoot. As for the tree climbing, it looks like splinter-city.

  7. That limber pole did look kind of wierd. It resembled a giant rat tail to me at first. Fun stuff to watch but to athletic for me.

  9. another game for you. Last night I was watching a British murder show, they had a cork standing on a stick. The players use a two feet long sticks to knock the cork over.

You won't want to stand too near to the target when I throw the axe. LOL
