Things that hide

There are sure a lot of things that hide around here. My keys. My phone. My favorite t-shirt. My black jacket. My camera. My drawing pencils. I wonder what percentage of time is devoted to looking for stuff. Is it all hiding on purpose?

Some things DO hide deliberately. Here's a bug, trying to look like a plug on the coffee maker. This makes two ways to wake up in the morning. It sure woke me up, no need for coffee at all.

There's a big herd of elk living on the edge of town and in all of the many times I've driven this road they've only appeared twice. They're huge animals! How do they disappear into the woods?

They jump the fence and simply vanish, that's how. John and I watched them play their magical disappearing act last week. Such secretive creatures.

This is an Oregon newt, hiding in a pond. I love these little guys.

A quote about hiding, which I don't believe is true:

"Women are naturally secretive, and they like to do their own secreting." (Arthur Conan Doyle)

What does it mean to do your "own secreting?"  Perhaps that's what my keys are doing right now. And my phone.

  1. Oh that plug bug is a little creepy but the elk are so cool.

    1. That bug was quite harmless, but a big surprise. The elk were a surprise too, on a much bigger scale.

  2. Losing - mislaying, as men say - is so common round our house that my name has became “Where is...?” At least that’s what it feels like from my end. I am reliably told by a man who frequently has to ask me to look for things that ‘they’ deliberately hide from him.

I don’t like the Conan Doyle quote. I can hear him sniggering about women’s secretions.

    1. I suppose that could be what he means, Friko, although it would have been shocking at the time for him to say it, the jerk.

  3. I am the one who rarely loses stuff but hubby can spend hours looking for almost everything he owns. I tend to be a bit anal and annoying about putting things away as I HATE wasting my time looking for stuff!

    1. The elk pics, taken at a distance with a pocket camera, are pretty fuzzy, but it was so special.

    1. It was crazy watching them stroll right up next to the fence and bounce straight up and over, one after another, patiently waiting their turns.

    2. I like the idea of agile, fence jumping elk.

  7. Yikes! What a way to wake up. *shivers* I find as I'm aging more and more things are disappearing. It's almost become a hide and seek game. The photos of the elk are magnificent! I'd love to see something like that. Lucky you!

    1. That's what I'll do from now on: call it a hide & seek game! So much more fun that way.

Oh I wish you had been here with your amazing wildlife photography skill. My photos don't do the elk justice.
