Let me eat cake

"It takes a pretty good cake to equal pie."

So says David Letterman, and while I love pie I'm tired of making blueberry pies. Yet as I gaze into the freezer I feel strongly that no blueberries should go to waste.

It's nearly blueberry season in the Willamette Valley, and all frozen berries must be vanquished pronto. We've eaten them on cereal in the morning, poured blueberry syrup on ice cream, and enjoyed fruit salads galore. There must be a good blueberry cake recipe out there. Not a crumble, not a coffee cake, but a cake cake. Anybody have a blueberry cake recipe to share?

No? Maybe you're all pie-eaters.

    1. There is one piece left since I took that photo this afternoon. It has your name on it.

  3. Blueberry muffins? Blueberry smoothies? Blueberries on green salads? Frozen blueberries in white wine?

  5. I love blueberry pie and seldom get to enjoy it. What do you charge for cross border shipping? :)

    1. AC, the pie is free, but shipping charges are a bit steep. A pkg to Canada costs about $50!! Tempted to send you a pie anyway. :)

  6. Blueberry pie is delicious if the baker knows how to make a delicious crust. Blueberry muffins are to die for. I could live on wonderfully made blueberry muffins. Yum, yum!

    1. GA, it's true that the crust is very important. I learned how from my mother-although she always used lard, which I avoid.

When the fresh blueberries come along we will have muffins for sure!

  7. Haha, pie over cake any day in my book. Especially blueberry! My daughter (in Portland, OR) is growing blueberries in her garden this year, among other fruits and vegetables.

    1. With all of these pie-eaters I wonder how cake even exists anymore!

Your daughter is going to love growing blueberries, although it may take a few years to get established. We have blueberries in our yard, too, but there is just so much shade that they don't flourish. Oh well, the pick-your-own places are everywhere and the season last 3 months, so I shouldn't feel sorry for myself.

  8. Although I rarely get to go blueberry-picking in the Willamette Valley, I do eat blueberries every day. I buy frozen when they're out of season and usually I just eat them with ricotta cheese and a little vanilla extract. My daughter is a blueberry-tarian (I swear she is going to pull a Violet Beauregard one of these days) and she eats them with plain whole-milk Greek yogurt. Sorry I can't help you with the cake! I'm also on Team Pie. :)

    1. Visions of Violet Beauregard float through my head every year in the warm summer months, Stephanie! Your daughter has it exactly right! And I love blueberries and yogurt, oh yeah.

  10. Pie, cake, I care not. All I know is that that first photo is absolutely stunning. It's the process of crumbling that does it for me. I love that. Thanks.

    Greetings from London.

    1. It is about the crumbling in pie photos, absolutely. I hadn't nailed that idea before, but you're right.

  11. When does blueberry season begin in the PNW? I was just wondering this morning. I have been feasting on strawberries like world's end.

(Ladybugs are a harbinger of good luck, btw.)

    1. Suze, Earliblu will be ripening later this month, then Spartans & Patriots, then Blucrop, followed by Legacy & Liberty throughout July and August. I have picked blueberries as late as September in Oregon. But my favorite time is mid July through early August. I love picking blueberries and always pick too many; it is one of the great pleasures of living here.
