I'll put a trinket on

Autumn
Emily Dickinson

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.

The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on.

On everyday dog-walks I am adorned these days with bracelets we bought from women at the Niamey National hospital in Niger, and that dot on my fingernail is all that is left of the henna designs put on my right hand in Foloa, Niger: ahhh, talismans and trinkets that I love! And now after reading Dickinson I will claim that I must wear these to keep up with Madame Autumn. She is becoming fancier with every passing day.

  1. I love this post. The bracelets are pretty. The dot on your thumb looks more like a blood blister. How did they put that design on you?

  2. I have these dots on all my fingernails, and they all look like blood blisters!! They are gradually growing up as my fingernails grow.
