Friday My Town Shoot-Out: My town's premier attraction

The idea of the My Town Shoot-Out is to post photos of your local community every Friday. This week's assignment was chosen by Kent, from Montana.

The biggest attraction in Corvallis is Oregon State University, and also the reason we moved here 11 years ago when John joined the faculty in the College of Forestry.

There are quite a few nice old buildings on campus but none of them were easy to photograph in the pouring rain this week. Here is a shot of the entrance to the Memorial Union. Those are bronze beavers, the school mascot, on top of the pillars.

This huge carved beaver is in the entrance to a cafeteria in the union building.

Last Saturday John went to the football game (Beavers vs. the Washington Huskies) at Reser stadium, and I handed him my little camera. The above shot shows you another giant ferocious beaver on the screen, and you can also guess the school colors: orange and black. The Beavers slaughtered Washington (Carrie, I know this is painful. UW is in a "building" year, and I felt bad for them. Heck, I don't even really like football.)

The camera, I see, contains several shots like this. Thanks John!

Reser stadium was the site where 638 people of various ages recently broke the world record for number of dancers performing Michael Jackson's "Thriller." They performed this on October 30, homecoming weekend, to the music of the OSU marching band. I don't think it compares to "The World's Largest Hand-Dug Well" but it's all we've got for now!

  3. I love your photo of the entrance. This post is really interesting. I would like to have been in that group of over 600 performers, dancing on a football field. I wonder how the girl in pink became the lead dancer. I was mesmerized by the video and it was enjoyable to watch.
