Friday My Town Shoot-Out: Weather

The idea of the My Town Shoot-Out is to post photos of your local community every Friday. This week's assignment was chosen by Emma, from Arizona.

All photos taken in Corvallis, Oregon.

I planned to take a picture each day this week, and figured there would be plenty of the usual variety of mysterious mist, rain, moody clouds and bursts of sun. It wasn't like that, but here goes anyway, the week's weather in pictures:

Last Friday: Weather often comes in from the west, and on my way home from work at 4:30PM a big front loomed over the Coast Range. "Here comes something," I thought, and snapped a picture from the car window.

Saturday: Sure enough, a cold front had come down from Alaska and the sky turned crystal clear, not a moody cloud in sight. This is mistletoe growing in the branches of an oak tree, spotted on our morning walk.

Sunday: the water in the ponds started to ice over; the blackberry cane is stirring it just enough to slow down the freezing process.

Monday: so cold that the dogs' water froze solid by the back door.

Tuesday: Cold, clear and windy, as you can see from the flags at the National Guard Armory in town. Flags are at half-mast for another fallen soldier from Oregon, the 21st to die in Afghanistan. His job: repairing meteorological equipment. His death: roadside bomb. On this bitterly cold, clear day with 3 flags snapping in the wind, I felt so sorry for his wife and child. Taking this picture for a photo shoot about weather felt...sad.

(I didn't put the acorn there. Somebody small and furry must've done that.)
Wednesday: So, we were supposed to be keeping an eye on a neighbor's house; usually this just means bringing in their mail. But today John heard an odd thrumming noise from their backyard. Their pond, lily pads and all, had frozen solid and the pump that circulates its water was protesting (uh-oh...raise your hand if you know anything about pumps). John contacted a pump guy who said not to turn it off. The neighbors returned in the afternoon (yay!)-- and promptly turned it off.

Thursday: Cold and frosty. While much of the US was digging itself out of snow drifts, we just admired the sparkling coat worn by leaves and grass.

So pretty.

Friday: Still very cold today. Even these hawthorn berries seem to be seeking refuge by snuggling in the embrace of the Queen Anne's lace. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

That was my week. How was yours?

  2. What a great collection of shots. I love the frosty leaves. Unfortunately the news of the fallen soldier is very sad. I feel for his family.

  3. I'm envious. I keep thinking about doing a photo a day instead of always digging back into old archives. I also keep thinking about exercising. Anyway, you have done an excellent job of it. A great journal of the week.

  5. I loved the photos of the frost on the oak leaves.

Your pictures were a great celebration of the diversity of weather this time of year. And how rapidly it all changes.

  6. Beautiful week! So much more photogenic than the drab, middle-temperature, grey around here. I really like how the ice is encroaching on that blackberry cane. It might stir to put off the inevitable, but the ice will get it!
It's very sad about the soldier. I pray for everyone falling in this conflict.

  9. Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous! I think my favorite is the last one with the berries. On Wednesday I would have preferred to see the frost on the leaves instead of 17" snow out my window!!Madison is now in a deep freeze with nasty roads.

  19. Your Monday blurb hits home for me. My husband was deployed to the Middle East twice, and being a military family is no easy task. Wednesday's shot is my favorite.
