Friday My Town Shoot-Out: Red

The idea of the My Town Shoot Out is to post photos of your community every Friday, and hopefully improve your photography skills. If you would like to see examples of this week's theme from other parts of the world, go here.

All pictures shot in Corvallis, Oregon.

Red: it's that time of year when you see a lot of this color that I like so well. For instance, the bulk bin candy selection is all about red and green right now.

This is Walt, owner of Schmidt's Garden Center, not far from my house. Sadly, he lost his wife a few years ago, but in his mid-80's he recently re-married.

For Christmas Walt dresses up for an open house at the greenhouse, where he proudly shows off his antique car.

Walt always has lots of poinsettias, which reminds me, I need to stop by today and get one. These plants are grown locally by the thousands.

For a change of pace I thought I'd share a few pics from my 8th grade art class, in which we have been looking at the artist Henri Matisse.  I really loved where kids chose to paint the color red: red hair on this model.

And a perfectly beautiful red table.

  1. Love that Walt pictured with his antique car!
Christmas is almost like the Chinese New Year, plenty or red around. For the Chinese the color red is consider auspicious to welcome the new year, hence the house are decorated with anything red.

  7. I love it that you featured Walt as Santa with his Antique Car and his nice Christmas Smile. How fun to have locally grown poinsettias and such a nice place to buy them! Matisse had such a brilliant eye for color and shape, and his use of Red is inspiring. Wonderful photos for the Color Red. Great ShootOut!

  12. Tell Walt to smile, he should now be happy with his new wife. Otherwise, nobody loves a sad Santa.
