Imagine

The local mosque, site of our most recent hate crime

Corvallis Oregon:
  • temporary hometown of 19-year-old Mohamed Osman Mohamed, arrested by the FBI after his failed attempt to set off a bomb at a Christmas tree lighting in Portland.
  • site of two unexplained church fires and most recently, an attempted fire-bombing of the local mosque, which Mohamed rarely attended.
No matter where you live, even if it is a seemingly out-of-the-way little town like Corvallis, there is still the possibility of a hate crime. So today, on the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death, and nearly forty years since he wrote the words to the song "Imagine," we still have a long way to go towards a peaceful world.

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too.

(OK, so the grammar is bad. The song is still great and so is the old music video.)

  2. It's such a sad statement, but no town, regardless of its size,is safe from crazy, sick people who have totally different agendas than the rest of us.

  3. EG Wow, I hope that we are evolving into better humans, I really do. It's why I have been a teacher. If I didn't believe that it would be hard to go on.

Merry, you are right. Here in this town people often think they are exempt from the outer world, but obviously it isn't true.

  4. Well, I'm in Eugene, as you know. Last Sunday, the Jewish temple here hosted an Islamic speaker who was there to present the truth about Islam. I didn't go because I wouldn't believe anything he said anyway as being representative of most Moslems. I would instead expect him to take all the warm and fuzzy passages from the Koran and present them as the whole truth. Maybe I sold him short, but I'm not likely to ever know. I see Islam as a desperately depraved religion because I seriously doubt that a day goes by on which another person isn't murdered in the name of Allah.
