Reub's journey

Outta the box

At four weeks old the foster kittens have figured out how to get out of their nest box. The first to do it was the one I must stop referring to as "Fatball," a richly-deserved but unflattering name.

Fatball never misses a meal, and also this week, he was the first to eat cat food. His excesses have in just 4 short weeks given him an extremely rotund figure. I also call him "Buzz" due to his deafening purr while eating. Well, who doesn't enjoy a good meal?

Once Buzz was out, the others were quick to follow.

Whoopee! The big world is so awesome. (Even if most of it has been covered with an ugly plastic tarp to protect the nice cork floor that lies beneath.)

Buzz and Purrl having a blast around the scratching post that John made for them.

Pretty Boy Floyd and Cricket join the fun as mama Hester Prynne wishes she were somewhere else.

Purrl resembles a cat that John had when he was in college, and every time he looks at her he gets all misty.

 Buzz enjoys crossword puzzles.

Purrl with Cricket, who gets her name from an ability to chirp like a cricket at age 2 weeks-- although she's since modified her meow to a more kitten-like sound. Cricket is already using the litter box, which is very cool of her.

Floyd is a pretty boy, and looks a lot like his elegant mama.

Who can resist Pretty Boy Floyd?

The book shelf is so inviting.

Although when they finally get sleepy, a lap is even better.

  2. Oh! Aren't they adorable? I spent a good deal of the spring and summer watching the Cornell Ornithology web site of the herons, and then of the ospreys in Missula. Their fledging reminds me of your kittens breaking out and exploring their world!!!

    1. That Cornell site was so cool, just like the Iowa raptor site last year. I love watching baby animals.

    1. This is an ominous comment. I am really really resisting the idea of keeping any of these kittens. I am. But the one that looks like John's old cat, that one...no. No. Mustn't.

    1. Stop! Stop calling them my kittens! They belong to Safe Haven Humane Society! They aren't mine. They aren't!

    1. Ha! I am trying to steel myself against the day they go back. They are so funny and cute, how could anyone part with them? How could I pick just one?

  6. Cute, cute, cute. Funny that Fatball purrs while eating. I think I do the same thing. It must be an emotional hang up.

    1. If people purred and wagged their tails when eating something they liked, think how crazy restaurants would seem.

    1. Onwards and upwards! Today they are scratching at the closed bedroom door because they have realized that the world is even bigger than they thought. They now know that they live in boxes inside boxes inside boxes...

    1. Aren't they? They're marked differently. I'm surprised there isn't an orange one in the bunch.

  10. They are such a sweet bunch. How are you going to be able to part with all of them when fostering is over?
I'd take one or two now, if you weren't so far away.

  11. If only I lived in the UK. All of these little monkeys would have homes by now, I swear.

Fostering will be over in 3 or 4 weeks. Perhaps these rascals will have tried my patience so much by that time I will be glad to hand them back?

  13. These little ones are so sweet! And I love the names you chose for each of them. Thank you for sharing. Don't you wish they would stay kittens? Just love this stage!

    1. I do love this stage and wish they didn't have to grow up and turn into big ol' cats. It's helpful to observe them as they evolve into little devils, reminding me that I actually maybe don't want them forever?
