Water

This week's topic for Friday My-Town Shoot-Out is a huge favorite of mine: water. I can't think of another subject that is more appropriate for the Pacific Northwest of the US.

About an hour's drive to the west of Corvallis lies the ocean.

Flowing right through the town itself is the Willamette River. It is very high, angry and rushing because of the storms we've been having lately.

But in a few months it will become tame enough for a canoe.

Meanwhile there is the rain. We had a very dry fall and winter, but now we're making up for it.

People complain about how much it rains here, but what do they expect if they move to a temperate rainforest?

I love the rainwater, the full creeks everywhere rushing to the sea.

Water itself is like some high-tech trick, a special effect that can take many forms.

Rain drops turning to ice.

A winter mist.

Although I love the rain, snow, and mist, I'm less fond of the mud. Try walking two big dogs through this stuff.

In fact we go through mud every day, but before coming in the house the dogs have to jump into a little pool of water to get clean. It's the only thing that works: the price of living in this climate and having dogs too.

Photos from-or near-Corvallis, Oregon.

  1. Oh, dear, would not want to clean up after a child or dog after tromping through the mud. Lovely set!

  4. You have so much water and we are still in a drought even with all the snow we had this past Winter. A few years ago we had more water than we wanted and lost our beautiful iron bridge like the one in your picture. Here is a shot of it before it was lost. (My thumb is there too and that is why I couldn't even be better with an expensive camera. lol. ) http://granan10.blogspot.com/2007/07/ignore-thumb.html

  5. So many great and wet photos! You have made me miss my ocean though, but I can't wait to try kayaking down some of our rivers in the summer, been in Alberta two years and haven't been on water yet!

  6. Great photos again.

I love the beaches in Oregon. We spent part of our honeymoon in Yachats - desolate and wonderful.

    1. I LOVE Yachats. The beach photo was taken north of there.

    2. I remember the seals... or sea lions? I never can keep those straight.

    3. Probably harbor seals there in Yachats. But if you went just north to Newport you would probably have seen the lazy, lovely, fascinating and obnoxious sea lions who often hang out on the piers and jetties there.

  8. Wonderful watery photos. I know the dogs don't mind the mud, but you seem to have a great system so it doesn't end up in the house!

    1. It's a pretty good system. I just wish they'd learn to dry their own paws as well as wash them.

  9. Oh, how I love your photos. They are so soothing. I'm very impressed with your dog training; I have to wipe my princess's paws off before she comes in. (Hence the song on my own blog today.)

    1. I visited your blog especially because of those muddy paws. Mud shows up so well on white fur, doesn't it?
