Friday My Town Shoot-Out: Bridges

The idea of the Friday My Town Shoot-Out is to post photos of your local community every Friday. This week's assignment was chosen by Elaine from Woodstock, Ontario, Canada.

Photos taken in or near Corvallis, Oregon
The black and white pics were shot in b&w and are unedited

Well, this last week has been quite a week for us-with bridges galore-and lots of fun. The most important bridge of all was created when our oldest son Ben married his partner Chrystal last Saturday.

Even the sun smiled down upon us that day.

But you are probably looking for a more traditional kind of bridge; this is easy to find in Corvallis, a town built on the banks of the Willamette River.

The only way to get into (or out of) my town is by crossing bridges. If you suffer from gephyrophobia (the fear of bridges) here, I suppose you might just as well suffer from agoraphobia (fear of going anywhere at all). Anyway. I took this picture standing under the incoming bridge, looking at the outgoing bridge.

Floods are an issue, so there is a gauge beneath the bridge to show high water marks; it goes up to 31 feet and we would really be in trouble if that happened.

It was unnerving standing under the bridge with that traffic rumbling overhead and some odd graffiti on the wall.

Another familiar bridge is the Irish Bend covered bridge, moved to the edge of the OSU campus, on a much-used biking/running path.

Inside the covered bridge, looking up.

On Monday we ventured west of town to Newport, accompanied by family members who had come for the wedding. This is a footbridge over Little Beaver Creek at Ona Beach State Park.

You have to stand and admire the creek at low tide.

A cast shadow on the creek.

Newport has a magnificent bridge across its bay.

Standing beneath it

Black-and-white seemed to accentuate its strength.

Looking at the Newport bridge from a crabber's pier below.

I was surprised when a seagull decided to fly into a frame.

Back at home it was really fun to photograph a couple of John's guitars. This is a bridge on a National Steel guitar. I could feel the urge to return to some color....

An irresistible urge! This is a bridge on a steel-stringed guitar.

I had fun with this assignment and can't wait to see what you did with it in your town.

  1. You sure had some variety on this shoot. And interesting angles up and down in covered bridges. Guitars, marriages...everything.

  3. Oh oh oh wonderful shoot out!! Wow so many I loved!! The seagull was cool and the covered bridge top..the sand bar and the shadow...Ok I loved them all!! Wow hon!
I never minded bridges till I moved out west. The small ones or even ones that have all the stuff over the top don't bother me. But those huge, long, winding 2000' drop off with nothing but a guard rail ones our here in the west..terrify me!! I am right there with ya girl!! Hugs, Sarah

  5. Wow, this is an incredibly well done post. I love all your photos. You certainly do have a good selection of bridges. I wouldn't mind crossing those bridges every day. What I like most about your post are all the lines and curves and shadows that you captured. Great job.

  6. Wonderful photography and that is the point of this project. For me it is trying to learn to see things other than what is directly in front of me. You did a great representation. Congrats to the newly weds. Blessings

  8. Congratulations to your son and his beautiful bride. I enjoyed seeing the covered bridge, one thing we just don't see here in Toronto. But the Newport Bridge, no matter which of its various angles you view it from, is just magnificent.

  11. excellent! My favorites are the looking down through the covered bridge, and the footpath. The b&w is just right for accentuating form and power.

  12. I'm with the others EXCELLENT!

I love the sound of a steel guitar, one of my open mic performers uses a full steel guitar and plays old rag time music!

Lovin your work Kerri, and congrats on the uniting, handsome couple!
