Sitting is the new smoking?

A sedentary lifestyle is so unhealthy that the Harvard Business Review blogged "sitting is the smoking of our generation." There are plenty of statistics to back this claim, and other interesting articles, like this one, on the lethal act of sitting too much.

Taking this idea to its natural conclusion, here's what our future holds if we don't mend our ways:

1. Surgeon General's Warning on all recliners.
2. Pregnant women must refrain from sitting.
3. Must be 21 to buy a chair.
4. Child's single tearful plea at Christmas: "All I want is for daddy to stop sitting!"
5. Overheard at the corner bar: "I gave up sitting 3 years ago, but I still get the urge when someone sits near me."
6. No sitting in public places.
7. These sitters! They never pick up their butts!

haha! I could entertain myself for a long time with this...have a good weekend y'all.

  2. You are so funny,

I was thinking recently that someone soon will do a study that proves smokers are healthier than non smokers in office situations because they get out of their chairs, go outside, smoke cigarettes and get some fresh air.

    Life is ironic, yes?

    1. Yes, and I love irony. I think your idea for that study is genius. I'm gonna pitch it to Philip Morris.

    1. I bet you get more walking/aerobic exercise than a lot of people who own cars. You have to. Well, unless you live right by the el, maybe. You are an occasional sitter.

    2. I live about a mile from the red line, and probably walk about 10 miles a day, here and there. I don't miss driving much, but it can be discouraging walking during the winter.

    3. 10 miles is a lot of walking. That's really good. I wonder how many miles most of us put on during the average week day, doing just normal stuff; I bet it's nowhere near 10.

    1. Well, that's the absolute worst, isn't it?!! There's a guy here who rides his bike and smokes & I guess he kind of equalizes the situation.

    1. It's true: a sitter never picks up his butt.:) Right? So smokers should never leave their butt behind.

  8. Oh this is too good. Ties in well with internet/computer addiction. My cardiac rehab information says we should stand up and walk around every 30 minutes but I'm not sure if we are supposed to stand up and walk around for another 30 minutes, or five minutes or just a few seconds. It is like one glass of wine being good for us but we don't know what size glass that should be. Inquiring minds......

    1. Indeed! I have taken that 30 minute routine to mean "stand up, walk around the house, sit down." Is that wrong?

Well, actually I get out and about quite a bit; I'm exaggerating. It would however, be easy to become sedentary with age.

You're right about the size of wine glasses! They really vary. huh. Something else to ponder.

    1. I know, right? Every single time I sit down now, there's this awful feeling, like I'm committing suicide excruciatingly (but comfortably) slowly.
