Reub's journey

To the coast

I love the Oregon coast and will drop everything to head that way for any excuse at all.

Here are some excuses:
1. Ed & Reub need a new place to run because it's boring to take them to the same old hillsides all of the time.
2. I'm hungry for clam chowder/halibut and chips.
3. It's cloudy here so it will be sunny there.
4. We haven't been there in days/weeks/months.
5. We have out-of-town visitors.
6. Time to go to the Rogue for some beer.
7. All of the above.

We've been hosting a visitor from Latvia, so of course we had to take the hour's drive west to hit the beach. That's her in the upper left taking pictures of  rocks at low tide.

 The rocks are extremely photogenic.

The trouble with digital cameras is that you can take hundreds of pictures of things like rocks, and then not want to part with any of them later. Every rock deserves a picture!

Some of the rocks had seaweed exposed by the low tide.

John pointed out that they all looked like comb-overs.

So then I couldn't get that thought out of my mind.

The rocks suddenly all looked like Brother Cadfaels buried in the sand.

Eventually we tore ourselves away from the beach, and headed to a pier near the Rogue brewery. Lots of families were there hoping to catch some Dungeness crabs. Here's one being hoisted up, but it was a female (illegal to keep), so after her lunch of raw chicken she was tossed back.

Our guest took this photo of a beer sampler at the Rogue. I had a sip of the double chocolate stout, but that was about it: somebody has to be the designated driver.

A day of puttering at the beach is worth a lot.

  1. You really made me laugh; those rocks really do look like they have bad comb overs.

  4. Great images from the Oregon coast. The rock formations are so marvelous. Looks like you had a great time including crab meat soup & lots of lovely wine at the brewery.

    1. Thanks RR; your next visit to the US perhaps you'll travel this way. Just a day or two from Idaho...

The brewery makes beers plus they have a distillery for whiskey (& maybe vodka?) but no wine, which is maybe a good thing as that would be difficult to resist.

    1. One or two of the things that are easier to find here than in Chicago. At least good chowder, and good stout.

  6. The comb over had me laughing. That is exactly what it looks like. Too funny. What a beautiful place, Kerry. I can see why it calls you. Your guest must have loved it.

    1. It was fun to take her there. She also entertained us, but with stories like how she bought a ticket to tour Hollywood, not realizing that the "real" Hollywood exists in California & not Florida which is where she was.:) oops!

    1. Granny A, the water is the ultimate sculptress, uncovering her works just twice a day.

  8. Oh my gosh, those rocks are something! First you had me dazzled by their unique shapes, then had me laughing at their comb-overs! Sounds like a fun day. I visited Cannon Beach once and was amazed by all the marine life on the rocks.

    1. You saw tide pools, probably. I love looking at tide pools, but there aren't any at this particular beach. Must go back to see the tide pools next time; they're just a few minutes' drive:)

    1. When we lived in Alabama we would drive down to the gorgeous gulf coast, where the sand was like sugar & you could watch dolphins playing in the warm gulf water. Great seafood, too. It's a totally different beach experience, but one that I also loved.

I bet the dogs loved every second also, with or without crab and beer.

    1. You're right about that, Rosaria. They could chase balls on the beach all day! They sleep really well afterwards.

  11. Lord Cadfel, I burst into giggles at that. They DO look like the top of a guy's head.

  12. THis looks like a perfect day and the coast is beautiful. I much prefer the rocks to only sand for photo purposes! We have just sand along our shores.

    1. The rocks are much more interesting, you're so right, especially when the tide is as low as this one was.

  14. We have been discussing the Oregon coast and a visit to McMinnville. Our daughter went to college there and we came to love the town. Have not been back for a few years. Our son-in-law's aunt lives there and we have talked of a family trip. On all those trips to McMinnville, we only got over to the coast one time, and certainly enjoyed it. We also took a drive to Tillamook one time to see the dairy co-op. I had, in another life, sold and shipped cottonseed feed to the Tillamook County Creamery dairies and wanted to see where that was. Now I buy Tillamook swiss cheese and butter on a regular basis.
